I know I’m late to the party, but bear with me.
Depending on where you live, ebay is not a very good last minute choice. For us in Canada to order from the states, could be 4 weeks. This means careful planning, not last minute. Even locally, it could be more than a week.
THrift stores, however, now those are great!

cheap costumes can also be made from leftover boxes. One year, when i was about 6, my dad made me a “robot” costume from leftover boxes that a light had come in, and some tinfoil. really simple. i think he sprung for a can of spray paint for it, too.

this year, i’m going as a clock. got a big piece of cardboard from work, and am buying a roll of red duct tape. i’ll wear a red hoodie with it, and white gloves, and just put my hands through the clock. the duct tape can be used on normal projects throughout the year, then.
