The Implications of Store Bought Cleaners vs. Natural Cleaners
I’ve tried making some of my own homemade cleaners and for me personally, it was a matter of trying to save a little money. For others it may be that they want to be more green and do a little less damage to the environment. And yet for others, they may want to protect their families from harmful chemicals. So, just what are the implications of using store bought cleaners vs. natural cleaners?
- Financial – Store bought cleaners are for the most part, ridiculously priced. And of course, the companies will market 20 different products that you just have to have in order to keep your home clean. In reality, most cleaners can be made from products you already purchase such as ammonia, vinegar, salt, borax and baking soda. Last I checked on those – they were all reasonably priced!
- Environmental – Many chemicals found in store bought cleaners are quite toxic to the environment and to wildlife. They wind up in our water supply due to being flushed down the toilet and poured down the drain and unfortunately, these chemicals cannot be filtered out. Natural cleaners are much more environmentally friendly and the damage to wildlife is minimal.
- Personal – For me personally, it is frightening to have a lot of chemicals around my small children, let alone my husband and me. There are so many things in cleaners that can harm you, cause cancer and there are probably some side effects that are not even known. When a package says that you need to wear gloves because the product may irritate your skin, it scares me to think what the fumes are doing to my lungs!
So, the next time you hear about homemade cleaners, know that they are a good thing for three different reasons. Take the time to whip yourself up a batch and not only will you be protecting your family, but you’ll also be helping the environment (being Green is the IN thing!) and saving money.
I used to make my own baby wipes when my son was little. I don’t remember the directions but they saved us a fortune!
Gosh we’ve all become so accustomed to just buying products without thinking what potential damage they could cause us. Point well made.
This is something that I think is a little tricky. The commercial cleaners work really well. I buy Store brand ones though.
Hey, nice post. I’ve never thought about making my own cleaning products, but it looks do-able. Thanks for the tips.
I know a lot of cleaning products are based around things like vinegar and bleach, I wonder how much difference the rest of the ingredients really make.
Thanks for the info. I’m looking into trimming down house expenses. From now on, I’ll use natural cleaners. I’m also thinking of using it to clean my ATV quad. I’m just afraid it would damage the paint. If you could recommend a natural cleaner, I’d appreciate it.
I am more concerned of the environmental impact or effect these cleaners would have.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Having it on the net just connects as many as thousand or hundred thousand readers to be aware of.
Cheers

I’m writing an article about cancer, which is what I was originally looking into when I came across your article. There are so many health concerns out there that people are dealing with, I did not know! This is high-quality information, thank you.
